Canadian actor Al Waxman is best remembered internationally for his role as Lieutenant Bert Samuels, the tough but supportive commanding officer of Cagney and Lacey in the CBS police drama Cagney & Lacey (1982-1988). His portrayal of a boss who genuinely respected his female detectives was notable for the era, and Waxman brought warmth and authority to a role that could easily have been one-dimensional.
...Waxman was already a major star in Canada before Cagney & Lacey, having starred in the long-running CBC series King of Kensington (1975-1980). After Cagney & Lacey, he continued to work in both American and Canadian productions, appearing in numerous films and television series. He passed away in January 2001, remembered as one of Canada's most beloved actors.
