Dennis Weaver (June 4, 1924 – February 24, 2006) was an American actor whose career spanned more than five decades in film and television. He rose to national prominence as Chester Goode, the limping deputy on the long‑running CBS western Gunsmoke (1955–1964), a performance that earned him an Emmy Award in 1959. Weaver later starred as the fish‑out‑of‑water lawman Sam McCloud on the NBC series McCloud (1970–1977), which brought him further Emmy nominations and became his signature leading role.
