Estelle Getty achieved her greatest fame relatively late in life, winning the role of Sophia Petrillo in The Golden Girls (1985-1992) at the age of 62. Despite being younger than Bea Arthur, whom she played the mother of, Getty's portrayal of the sharp-tongued Sicilian matriarch was one of the most beloved performances of the decade, earning her an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 1988.
...Getty had spent decades working in theatre and small television roles before her breakthrough. Her Sophia was famous for her 'Picture it: Sicily...' storytelling intros and her devastatingly blunt observations about life. After The Golden Girls, she reprised the role in The Golden Palace (1992-1993) and starred in the sitcom Empty Nest. She passed away in July 2008 after a long illness.
