Lennard Pearce (born Leonard Pearce; 31 October 1915 – 15 December 1984) was an English stage and television actor best known for originating the role of Grandad (Edward “Ted” Trotter) in the BBC sitcom Only Fools and Horses from 1981 until his death in 1984. Trained at RADA, Pearce had a long career in repertory and West End theatre and was a regular presence in British television drama and anthology series from the 1950s onwards. His portrayal of Grandad—quiet, affectionate and often exasperated—helped establish the emotional centre of the show’s early years and remains the most recognised screen performance of his career. He died in December 1984 while the programme was in production, and his passing prompted a rapid rewrite of the series’ fourth season.
