Phylicia Rashad became one of the most admired actresses on American television in the 1980s through her role as Clair Huxtable, the elegant, Harvard-educated lawyer and devoted mother in The Cosby Show (1984-1992). Her portrayal of a strong, intelligent Black woman who balanced a demanding career with family life was groundbreaking for American television and earned her multiple Emmy nominations.

...Rashad had worked extensively in theatre before The Cosby Show, appearing in Broadway productions including Dreamgirls. After the series, she continued to work in theatre, film, and television, earning Tony Award nominations for her stage work. She became the first Black actress to win the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for her role in A Raisin in the Sun in 2004. She remains one of the most distinguished actresses of her generation.
