Sir Terry Wogan was one of the most beloved broadcasters in British television history. Born in Limerick in 1938, he joined the BBC in the 1960s and became a household name across the United Kingdom. His self-titled chat show Wogan, which ran on BBC1 from 1982 to 1992, was broadcast three times a week at its peak and regularly attracted audiences of 7–8 million viewers. Wogan's effortless charm, gentle wit, and ability to put guests at ease made the show essential viewing throughout the 1980s, with guests ranging from politicians and royalty to pop stars and Hollywood actors.
... Beyond his chat show, Terry Wogan was the face of the BBC's Eurovision Song Contest commentary for decades, his dry wit transforming the event into a national institution. He also presented Children in Need from 1980, raising hundreds of millions of pounds for charity. Knighted in 2005, Wogan received a CBE in 1997 and was awarded honorary Irish citizenship. He passed away on 31 January 2016 following a short illness, and tributes poured in from across the world for a man widely regarded as the warmest and most gifted broadcaster of his generation.
