Gospel roots and early recording career
Born into a musical church family, Aretha Franklin first sang at New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit under the ministry of her father, C. L. Franklin. She recorded gospel sides as a teenager and signed to Columbia Records at 18. Her move to Atlantic Records in 1966 allowed producers to harness her gospel-trained voice, producing the late-1960s recordings that established her as the 'Queen of Soul'. [1]
