Formed while the members were students at Tuskegee Institute, they became one of Motown's most successful acts. The band is well-known for their smooth ballads, many of which were written and sung by Lionel Richie, as well as their high-energy funk tracks. In the 1980s, they continued to achieve success even after Richie's departure, notably with the hit 'Nightshift'.
