From Gary to Motown: the prodigy emerges
Born in Gary, Indiana, Michael Jackson debuted at age six and soon shared leads with Jermaine in the Jackson 5. After touring the Chitlin’ Circuit and winning amateur nights, the group signed to Motown, rapidly scoring four US number-one hits: I Want You Back, ABC, The Love You Save, and I’ll Be There. Rolling Stone hailed young Michael as “a prodigy,” and he became the group’s central attraction and lead singer, setting the stage for a transition from child star to teen idol and, ultimately, solo phenomenon.
