Ed O'Neill became one of the most recognisable faces in American television comedy through his role as Al Bundy, the misanthropic, shoe-selling patriarch of the dysfunctional Bundy family in the Fox sitcom Married... with Children (1987-1997). His portrayal of a man perpetually defeated by life yet stubbornly resistant to self-improvement was a sharp satirical counterpoint to the idealised family sitcoms of the era.
