Jean Smart became a familiar face on American television in the late 1980s through her role as Charlene Frazier Stillfield, the sweet, naive, and romantically optimistic receptionist in the CBS sitcom Designing Women (1986-1991). Her portrayal of the small-town Georgia girl with big dreams brought warmth and innocence to the show's ensemble, earning her Emmy nominations and making Charlene one of the series' most beloved characters.

...Smart had worked extensively in theatre before Designing Women, and her stage training gave her performances a depth that elevated what could have been a purely comedic role. After leaving Designing Women in 1991, she continued to work in film and television, appearing in numerous productions. In recent years she has experienced a remarkable career renaissance, winning Emmy Awards for Watchmen (2019) and Hacks (2021-present), establishing herself as one of the finest actresses of her generation.
